SM!LE - Prevention Program |
|
The concept for this program was first introduced at the 43rd EDSA meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Our goal was to establish a unique prevention program that would be easy to implement in all dental schools in Europe and also help students from different countries get involved in the same project.
A prevention program aiming to help students was the best way to promote the values of dental medicine across the whole of Europe among future academics. What’s more, the act of volunteering has been well known and highly evaluated among EDSA members since its foundation in 1988. All of the above as well as the fact that 80% of today’s medicine is based on prevention programs prompted us to set up “SM!LE”.
We established contacts with some companies (P&G is our partner on this project) as well as European Federation of Periodontology and ADEE who gave us their full support for the project.
The project will consist 2 parts:
- the dental students will spread leaflets about oral health as well as some promotion material to students from other faculties
- the students from the other faculties will be invited for a free dental consult done by dental students.
This two-stage program has the advantage of both evaluating oral health between students and providing future dentists with an opportunity to practice.
At the end of 2009. pilot version of the program will be conducted in Leeds, UK, and we expect that in the beginning of March 2010. will have at least 5 more dental school joining the program.
